During Women's History Month (March) and throughout the year, the Murray Center brings women leaders from academe, industry, and government to talk about their achievements, their research breakthroughs, and how they shaped their successful careers. In 2006-2007, the Murray Center partnered with NJIT ADVANCE, the Technology and Society Forum, the Albert Dorman Honors College, and academic departments in sponsoring presentations by a number of internationally-known researchers, including:
- Dr. Deborah Estrin, Jon Postel Chair in Computer Networks at UCLA and Founding Director of the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing, who discussed her research on “Wireless Sensing Systems: From Ecosystems To Human Systems”;
- Dr. Susan Richardson, a research chemist at the US Environmental Protection Agency, who discussed “The Next generation of Drinking Water Disinfection By-Products and current Issues”;
- Dr. Margaret Leinen, Chief Science Officer and VP of Climos and former Assistant Director for Geosciences at the National Science Foundation. Click here to view a video of Leinen’s lecture on global warming, “Global Change: The Challenges for Research in a World Aware of Change.”
- Dr. Cynthia Breazeal, Director of the Robotic Life Group at the MIT Media Lab. (Click here to view a video of Dr. Breazeal’s talk, “Designing Socially Intelligent Robots.”)
Dr Breazeal and Dr Leinen were the 2006 and 2007 keynote speakers at the Murray Center’s annual Gilbreth Colloquium, an event that honors NJIT’s first woman professor, the industrial engineering pioneer Dr. Lillian Moller Gilbreth.
The Murray Center also brings in prominent speakers to share best practices and research on the recruitment and retention of women students, including
- Dr. Jane Zimmer Daniels, Program Director, Clare Boothe Luce Program, Henry Luce Foundation, and
- Dr. Jacquelynne Eccles, Director of the Gender and Achievement Research Program at the University of Michigan. (Click here to download a PowerPoint outline of Dr. Eccles’ 2005 presentation, “Encouraging Women to Choose Careers in Science & Technology: Understanding and Overcoming Barriers.)
